University of Melbourne
Associate Professor and Service Head, Emergency and Critical Care
Werribee, VIC
I grew up in Sunderland in North-east England then went to vet school in Liverpool. I then sped off to the University of Pennsylvania where I did my internship and ECC residency. I was ACVECC board certified in 1994 then worked in Penn’s Emergency Service for the next 7 years. In 2001 I returned to England to set up the ECC service at the Royal Veterinary College where I also ran their small animal internship and ECC residency programmes. In the early oughties I joined a fabulous group of folks in the European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society and was honoured to be that group's Founding President.

In 2007 I moved to Australia and worked initially as an ECC consultant and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Massey University, NZ teaching an online Masters course in Emergency and Critical Care. In 2011 I took up my current job as head of the ECC service at the University of Melbourne. My long standing clinical and research interests are transvascular fluid homeostasis, fluid therapy and the treatment and monitoring of shock, especially lactate. I have a long standing interest in all things eLearning and using innovative and engaging learning and teaching methods including having a laugh to stimulate learning. As John Cleese said “Too many people confuse being serious with being solemn.”
